On Site Massage Services: How Often is Often Enough?

Committing to a regular massage program for your office is a great first step. What employee doesn’t love a massage?

But as an HR director or wellness manager, you’ve got to decide the best option for your company: How often should your massage therapists come in to the office?

In this article, we’ll go over what to expect from a weekly, bi-monthly, monthly, or quarterly office massage program.

How Often Should I Get a Massage at Work?


I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that massage is good for the body and mind. It’s well understood that regular massage helps people relax. And it’s great for recovery from workouts, injuries, or just plain day-to-day stress.

But there’s a tricky word there: regular.

What exactly is a “regular” massage? Is there such thing as the perfect frequency for an office massage program?

Weekly Chair Massage at Work

A weekly chair massage is a dream come true for your employees.

Not only does a 15-20 minute chair massage feel good, but it’s the best way to ensure you’re getting some ROI on your massage program.

Keeping a regular schedule like this allows your employees to build a strong working relationship with their massage therapist. With this frequency, your massage therapists will be able to address reoccurring trouble areas your employees have.

Weekly massage therapy is also a great frequency to help keep muscle knots and tension at bay.

By week 2 and certainly by week 3, employees who receive a regular chair massage will report feeling more relaxed, focused, and energized at work.

The only reason we’ve seen companies shy away from a weekly massage program is financial concerns.

Though there is proven ROI for successful corporate massage programs, not all companies are able to cover the cost before seeing those returns. If this is the case, a less frequent program would be a better fit.

However, most massage companies will offer price cuts on “bulk massages” — so the more massage you get, the cheaper each massage costs.

Twice Per Month On Site Chair Massage Service

A bimonthly (twice per month) massage program is a popular option for companies wanting to balance cost and effectiveness.

Bimonthly programs have the added benefit of allowing for greater schedule flexibility.

For example, depending on the size of the massage company you hire, you may be able to have enough therapists to work on every employee during each chair massage visit, even though the sessions aren’t weekly.

Having massage therapists in every other week will help a company save on costs, while still allowing for regular employee massages.

You can schedule fewer therapists for each session and spread out the sessions among your employees.

Monthly Workplace Chair Massage Programs

Many of our regular clients offer a monthly on site massage program for their employees. This works great for many reasons.

With a larger company, employees can take turns signing up every few months so everyone has a chance to get a massage.

Small companies may be able to fit everyone in on the same day.

It all depends on how many massage therapists you use for the day, and how long the therapists stay. Most workplace chair massage companies will help you figure out these details.

One con of a monthly program will depend on how many employees you have. If only a small number of employees get a massage each time because there are too many employees to go in one day, there won’t be much of an impact made on your team as a whole.

However, there’s a work-around for that problem: Rather than just having one or two massage therapists come for your massage day, hire several at a time, so more employees can get their chair massages at the same time.


Quarterly On Site Chair Massages

Quarterly massage programs have their benefits as well.

Since they happen less frequently, there’s a chance for a bigger budget being spent on a quarterly massage event.

This could mean having longer massage sessions for each employee (20-30 minutes each versus 10-15).

Having on-site chair massages once every few months can be an opportunity to roll the event into a larger employee appreciation event, a quarterly review of business success, or a general just-for-the-heck-of-it social gathering.

One downside to a quarterly program is that it doesn’t offer much in the way of ROI for worker’s compensation.

And it won’t really make a dent in your employees’ health and wellness goals.

Even so, a chair massage always feels great and will be much appreciated by your employees. But for greater return on investment regarding health care costs, a more frequent program may be better suited.
